Explore the Printshop: Intro to Drypoint

  • Peters Valley School of Craft 19 Kuhn Road Sandyston, NJ, 07851 United States (map)

Come get comfortable in the Peters Valley print shop. Learn all the basics of printmaking: color mixing, how to cut and tear paper, and how to use an etching press. We will be exploring the process of drypoint which is a method of intaglio printmaking. We will be learning how to draw on our plexiglass plates by scratching our images onto the surface with a needle tool. We will then ink our whole plate pushing the ink into the scratches, wipe the plate clean leaving the ink in the marks we made, and finally print on damped paper which pulls the ink out of the scratches we made that are holding the ink. This process allows for the possibility of beautifully delicate, intricate line work in our prints. This is a wonderful printmaking method that was traditionally done on copper plates with lots of chemicals, in this class we will be taking a contemporary and non toxic approach to this century old technique. This class is for all levels of students whether you are comfortable in a print studio or have never touched a press. The process of wiping the plate can be hard on the hands and wrists so please take that into consideration when registering.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants
